Taarabai's Philosophy

Our Mission

At Taarabai, we believe fashion should nurture both the environment and the people who wear it. Our mission is to challenge fast fashion by offering an alternative—sustainable, ethical, and mindful dressing.

Every piece we create is a step toward reducing waste, promoting minimalism, and empowering artisans.

The Taarabai Story

Taarabai was born from a deep personal transformation.

Our founder, Swagatha Krishnan—a renowned South Indian singer and actor—once owned an overwhelming collection of over 5,000 outfits. As she embraced a more spiritual and mindful lifestyle, she saw the need to revolutionize her approach to fashion.

In 2022, she turned this vision into reality in the serene hills of Rishikesh, near the sacred Ganga River.

With the help of skilled artisans, she built Taarabai—an eco-conscious brand committed to chemical-free craftsmanship.

Today, each garment is an expression of her unwavering dedication to sustainability, minimalism, and tradition.

Founder’s Journey

Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Swagatha Krishnan began her musical journey at the age of three. She pursued her early education in Madurai before moving to Bangalore to earn an engineering degree. While in college, her passion for music led her to perform on television, marking the beginning of her professional singing career.

After graduation, she left the corporate world to pursue music full-time, quickly establishing herself as a playback singer across all South Indian languages. Over the next 15 years, she thrived in the film industry—not only as a singer but also as the lead actor in four films.

In 2016, Swagatha discovered a deep fascination for ancient South Indian fabric art techniques.

Immersing herself in traditional craftsmanship, she traveled extensively to learn kalamkari, hand block printing, and natural dyeing, absorbing these age-old practices with enthusiasm and dedication.

Through her journeys, she witnessed firsthand the struggles of rural artisans, inspiring her mission to revive and preserve these vanishing crafts.

Her experiences in the film industry also exposed her to the discomfort of synthetic clothing, reinforcing her desire for a sustainable alternative.

A turning point came when she confronted the sheer excess in her wardrobe—thousands of unworn garments—leading her to embrace minimalism, inspired by Joshua Millburn’s Everything That Remains.

Determined to redefine fashion with purpose, she gave away 95% of her wardrobe, vowing to align fashion with sustainability and nature.

In 2022, Swagatha founded Taarabai, opening its first store in Chennai and a small space in Laxman Jhula, Rishikesh, which has since flourished into a full-fledged art house and showroom.

As Taarabai’s chief artisan, she personally trains and empowers the women of Rishikesh, equipping them with traditional skills and financial independence.

Today, Taarabai stands as a sanctuary for conscious fashion, where visitors witness the magic of Ayur Fabrics being meticulously handcrafted in a chemical-free, eco-conscious space.

Each piece tells a story of heritage, sustainability, and timeless artistry.
